The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Our Commentary on Saying 6.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

Gospel of Thomas Saying 6 - fasting, prayer, and charity.
His disciples questioned him and said to him, "Do you want us to fast? How shall we pray? Shall we give alms? What diet shall we observe?" Jesus said, "Do not tell lies, and do not do what you hate, for all things are plain in the sight of heaven. For nothing hidden will not become manifest, and nothing covered will remain without being uncovered."

Jesus’ disciples, by asking him what he wanted them to do “to fast? How shall we pray? Shall we give alms? What diet shall we observe?" they were asking for more. The disciples wanted to be given a key to higher knowledge. But what the disciples needed to understand was that no physical act of charity or piety, in itself would get them to heaven. The good opinion of others counts for nothing. There is nothing in this world that could be given to them other than the guidance of the wise for their journey within.
Jesus’ answer to his eager disciples was "Do not tell lies, and do not do what you hate”. Jesus, understanding his disciples’ motives, was instructing them to do only what their hearts told them to do because it is the intuition of the heart that leads the way. The way to divine self-enlightenment is not to be untrue to yourself in this world because what is untrue withers and burns in the light of divine truth. "all things are plain in the sight of heaven”. As the disciples consciously seek within for the kingdom of heaven, guided by divine reason they will come to know how to discipline themselves and how to surrender, “For nothing hidden will not become manifest, and nothing covered will remain without being uncovered.”
