The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 043 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 43 - Disciples should recognize Jesus in his sayings.
His disciples said to him, "Who are you, that you should say these things to us?""You do not realize who I am from what I say to you, but you have become like the Jews, for they (either) love the tree and hate its fruit (or) love the fruit and hate the tree."
"Who are you, that you should say these things to us?"
It seems that although the disciples hear the truth in Jesus’ teaching, they also want to know what authority Jesus has to teach it.
"You do not realize who I am from what I say to you”
Jesus points out that although the disciples hear the truth of what he teaches, they question whether Jesus has the right to reveal such truth.
"you have become like the Jews, for they (either) love the tree and hate its fruit (or) love the fruit and hate the tree."
Jesus describes the disciples questioning of him by comparing their motives to someone who likes the apples they picked from the tree, but are belligerent about the tree being an apple tree.
Those that love and recognise the truth above all would not be distracted by its source.
Those that don’t respect the source of truth are confused by duality.
Jesus is referring to those Jews that are hostile to him, so they don't hear the truth he preaches because they do not wish to accept his right to preach it. They are under the delusion of duality.
