The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 023 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas saying 23 - Few are chosen.
Jesus said, "I shall choose you, one out of a thousand, and two out of ten thousand, and they shall stand as a single one."
Jesus cannot pass on all that is required to become a teacher like Jesus himself.
What cannot be taught or passed on is the divine understanding that is the source of Jesus’ words.
Divine knowing comes from within. This is realisation. The few who, through grace have had their knowledge lit by the truth to become fully realised, are very few "one out of a thousand, and two out of ten thousand"
As Jesus teaches he is looking for that light of divine realisation to shine from one of his followers. It is the realised that Jesus will choose for his work. Jesus means that there is no exam or test to pass, no percentage to meet. The light of the realised few will show itself from the midst of the many.
"they shall stand as a single one."
The divine realised have the power of the unity of existence itself through their understanding of non-duality. Be they one bodily form or many forms, they have the knowledge of the singularity of existence itself.
