The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Our Commentary on Verse 038 of Thomas Gospel.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

Gospel of Thomas Saying 38 - Jesus' sayings have long been awaited.
Jesus said, "Many times have you desired to hear these words which I am saying to you, and you have no one else to hear them from. There will be days when you will look for me and will not find me."

"Many times have you desired to hear these words which I am saying to you”
The disciples had always looked to Jesus for their understanding of God. It was through his words that they sensed the bliss of the divine.

"you have no one else to hear them from”
Jesus is saying that until or unless he speaks, the disciples know nowhere else they can turn to for divine guidance. This should be taken as Jesus’ assessment of the disciple’s current level of spiritual awareness. It was not meant to be a statement of ongoing fact. The disciples needed to hear this.

"There will be days when you will look for me and will not find me.”
The disciples saw the human form of Jesus as their source of divine knowledge. But, as Jesus is saying, he will not always be personally available.
The meaning and its implications in this saying from Jesus’ are even more applicable to us today of course.
Jesus wants all to hear his words and properly understand. Jesus’ Divinity did not and does not come with his bodily form. Everyone can access divine knowing. This is the reality of this very eternal existence itself.
This existence is a Singularity of Consciousness, it is Absolute and eternally complete.
We and the disciples are all identical to Jesus. There are not two. We all, in our true form of being are this one same consciousness Absolute. Jesus was Divinely blessed through his higher conscious knowing of the Absolute of course.
Within, as it were, this single consciousness of living we all have access to higher levels of awareness of the Divine. Whenever Jesus spoke, he was speaking from higher divine consciousness.

The true purpose of Jesus’ teaching was not simply to teach us how to behave or to be ‘good’ in this life experience. Jesus’ purpose was to teach us of the need to become aware of our inner ability to access divine truth. That is all, because once this truth is seen then all else becomes known.
