The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Our Commentary on Verse 008 of Thomas Gospel.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

Gospel of Thomas Saying 8 - A parable of an intelligent fisherman.
And he said, "The man is like a wise fisherman who cast his net into the sea and drew it up from the sea full of small fish. Among them the wise fisherman found a fine large fish. He threw all the small fish back into the sea and chose the large fish without difficulty. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."

The wise fisherman, on finding the one thing a fisherman needed to sustain his life, A large fish, chose that above all else.
But, considering the ordinary Man or Woman, what is their work after they have fed themselves? For all people, surely our task is to find the reason for this life itself. Jesus is telling us to find the one thing that will sustain us forever and to disregard all else "He threw all the small fish back into the sea".   This life is full of worldly information. But, this world will end. Therefore the biggest and most important single piece of information must be what we need to know to reach eternal peace. That One thing is the Non-Dual Divine Absolute.

The wise man seeks knowledge of the one thing above all else, the way back home to the truth, consciousness and bliss of the One nondual Divine absolute, God. "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."
