The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 016 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 16 - Jesus has come to cause division.
Jesus said, "Men think, perhaps, that it is peace which I have come to cast upon the world. They do not know that it is dissension which I have come to cast upon the earth: fire, sword, and war. For there will be five in a house: three will be against two, and two against three, the father against the son, and the son against the father; And they will stand solitary."
Jesus said, "Men think, perhaps, that it is peace which I have come to cast upon the world. They do not know that it is dissension which I have come to cast upon the earth”
Jesus wants people to understand that he is not interested in pacification or peace above all things.
Jesus came to teach us the true reality of our existence. If hearing the truth causes argument and division then so be it. Jesus teaches us why it is essential for us all to be fully aware of the truth behind our life experience.
"fire, sword, and war. For there will be five in a house: three will be against two, and two against three, the father against the son, and the son against the father"
Jesus expected opposition to his teaching. Jesus himself experienced hostility and he eventually met the ultimate violence.
In verse 2. of this Gospel, Jesus describes the seeing of higher truth as causing a period where one may become “troubled.” But Jesus goes on to say “he will be astonished, and he will reign over All.”
Jesus teaches why it is essential for the truth to be known. Because, for a being to find its way back home to unity with the divine Absolute, or God, that being needs to become consciously aware of the true nature of his or her existence. The conscious realisation of higher truth and its reality will enable one to surrender any further desire for this world and to seek only to return to Divine unity. Conscious awareness will be our only guide.
“And they will stand solitary”.
The truth of Divine unity, nonduality, is profound. Jesus is prepared, if need be, for this truth to cause argument troubles and division. The reward for the brave is that they will come to realise the non-dual reality of their being, “And they will stand solitary.”
Through divine knowledge our one desire will be to return home to unity with the singularity of existence. We will reside in the Truth, Consciousness and Bliss of the divine Absolute.
