The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 063 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 63 - A parable of a rich man who died.
Jesus said, "There was a rich man who had much money. He said, 'I shall put my money to use so that I may sow, reap, plant, and fill my storehouse with produce, with the result that I shall lack nothing.' Such were his intentions, but that same night he died. Let him who has ears hear."
“ There was a rich man who had much money. He said, 'I shall put my money to use so that I may sow, reap, plant, and fill my storehouse with produce, with the result that I shall lack nothing.”
This man was comfortable in his material richness.
This man lacked no material resource. In fact, this man calculated he had an excess to his present-day needs.
So, This man decided the best use of his time now would be to work as an investment in his future material security and comfort.
“Such were his intentions, but that same night he died. Let him who has ears hear.”
This man was clever in his endeavours, and worthy in his intentions, no doubt.
But this man lacked the wisdom to question the very nature of his existence and his life.
Without acquiring wisdom, man’s best intentions can come to nought, "Such were his intentions".
Wiser beings would question their status as regards to what is this life experience? What is my purpose here? Where did all ‘This’ come from? What is going to happen to all ‘This’? what will happen to ‘Me’ when I die?
The wise would realise that their most limited resource is ‘lifetime’.
The wise would realise the futility in investing such a limited resource into its own limited and also unknown future.
The wise would invest the time they have now in seeking the knowledge and understanding that would reveal the future of their very existence, before it happens. Did it start with birth and does it end with death? Or, is there something more?
Did this existence come from nothing? Will existence itself come to an end?
Will this consciousness of all things come to an end? What is it that is immortal?
Without some awareness or consideration of the above questions, it must be foolish to spend one’s time now in accumulating yet more decaying material. “Let him who has ears hear”
ref. Luke 12:13-21.
