The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Our Commentary on Verse 061 of Thomas Gospel.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

Gospel of Thomas Saying 61 - - Jesus on Salome's couch.
Jesus said, "Two will recline on a couch; one will die, one will live.”
Salome said, "Who are you man? You have climbed onto my couch and eaten from my table as if you are from someone.”
Jesus said to her, "I am he who exists from the undivided. I was given from the things of my Father.”
"I am your disciple.”
"For this reason I say, if one is whole, one will be filled with light, but if one is divided, one will be filled with darkness."

We believe this saying to be a clear statement of Advaita, the non-duality of existence.

“Jesus said, "Two will recline on a couch; one will die, one will live.”
Jesus is referring to the human manifestation of a person, in this instance one being supported by a couch. Although the reference could also include a ‘soul’ as it were, being supported, in this, life, by the material form of a body.
The meaning is, one of the supported is the body. It was born, it has no eternal truth, it will suffer entropy and eventual death.
The other that is reclined on the couch along with the body is the true being of the apparent material form. Our true being is unborn, we are a reflexion, in consciousness, which is of Absolute Knowledge. The Absolute or God is immortal. Therefore our true being is immortal and does not die.
Hence, “one will die,” our material form and “one will live” our true being of eternal existence.

“Salome said, "Who are you man? You have climbed onto my couch and eaten from my table as if you are from someone.”
Clearly Salome has understood the meaning contained in Jesus’ saying.
Salome realises the profound insight and importance of Jesus’ words.
Salome questions the ordinariness of this person named Jesus “You have climbed onto my couch and eaten from my table”.
Salome desires to know how and from where “as if you are from someone” Jesus obtained his authority, insight and wisdom.

“Jesus said to her, "I am he who exists from the undivided. I was given from the things of my Father.”
Jesus explains the truth of non-duality. “the undivided” is of course the Singularity of existence. Existence itself, which alone is the singularity of absolutely all knowledge, forms the one consciousness which supports the conscious experience of many lives.
The “things of my Father,” from which Jesus was given is the knowledge of absolute consciousness or God
It is divine knowledge as consciousness which enables and supports all apparent manifestations, including Jesus himself.

"I am your disciple.”
Salome, who has the ears to hear, recognises the truth in Jesus’ words and declares herself a disciple.

“For this reason I say, if one is whole, one will be filled with light, but if one is divided, one will be filled with darkness.”
This final declaration of non-duality from Jesus.
If you become conscious and aware of your non-dual being you see the light of the truth of existence, “one will be filled with light” .
But, if you cling to a consciousness limited to duality, you will be clouded by material desire. The ignorance perpetuated by an understanding limited to duality is an experience of relative darkness.
