The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Gospel of Thomas Saying 53 - True circumcision.
His disciples said to him, "Is circumcision beneficial or not?"
He said to them, "If it were beneficial, their father would beget them already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become completely profitable."

“ His disciples said to him, "Is circumcision beneficial or not?"

The disciples are asking about the ritual of removing the foreskin from male genitalia.

“He said to them, "If it were beneficial, their father would beget them already circumcised from their mother.”

Jesus speaks plainly and denies any need for this to be done. Jesus explains that if the foreskin needed removing then nature or God would have taken care of it before birth.

“Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become completely profitable."

Jesus reminds the disciples that their true being, in spirit, is not their body.
Rather than cutting to enhance his physical presence in this world, man should cut, separate or “circumcise” himself from his original desire to experience the material world. He should cut his true being free from his material desire. He should renounce the world and profit by revealing his way back home to God.
