The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Our Commentary on Verse 072 of Thomas Gospel.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

Gospel of Thomas Saying 72 - Jesus does not divide, existence is non-dual.
A man said to him, "Tell my brothers to divide my father's possessions with me.” He said to him, "O man, who has made me a divider?"
He turned to his disciples and said to them, "I am not a divider, am I?"

“A man said to him, "Tell my brothers to divide my father's possessions with me.” He said to him, "O man, who has made me a divider?"
Jesus is using this mundane request to help divide wealth between brothers, a role that Jesus has no interest in, to refer to an aspect of his higher teaching.

He turned to his disciples and said to them, "I am not a divider, am I?"
Jesus put this question to his disciples. But clearly he was seeking something other than just confirmation from them.
At the heart of all Jesus’ teaching is the gentle message of non-duality. Gentle, because Jesus knows that although non-duality is good news, those whose belief is founded in duality undergo a period of profound fear before proper understanding arises. So, people need to come to the full realisation of non-duality themselves.

Therefore, the subtle meaning of Jesus’ question to his disciples was as a reminder to them that unity was his message. Further, those with a higher understanding would hear his teaching of our ultimate unity, the singularity of existence.
