The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 036 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 36 - What we wear is unimportant.
Jesus said, "Do not be concerned from morning until evening and from evening until morning about what you will wear."
Jesus would include our physical form, our body as clothing for our true being. Jesus would accept the wearing out of the body as he would the wearing out of his wardrobe. keeping the integrity of our true being prepared to return home is our true concern, it is paramount.
Treasuring our form, what we actually wear, how we look, can keep us occupied mentally and even physically for much of our time. We believe that these considerations are important because they affect how others judge us, this is the ego that believes our form is who we are.
All of our concerns about our person arise from a belief in duality, The seeing of separation. This leads to the misconception that we can control our destiny. A very ambitious ego can expend a lifetimes energy in achieving material goals that enhance our status among others.
Jesus tells us to not be too concerned with the day to day cares of social life. We haven’t been born unexpectedly. This life experience was our original desire. Our concerns now should be how to find our way back home to God, the Absolute.
How we appear to others, or other peoples opinion of us counts for nothing. The knowledge of the Absolute reality is the cloak that will get us home.
