The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 025 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas saying 25 - Love your sibling like yourself.
Jesus said, "Love your brother like your soul, guard him like the pupil of your eye."
In reality there is no separation between you and your brother or neighbour. Jesus is instructing us to love others as we would love ourselves or our brother because we are all this one divine existence. When we see the form of another person, we are seeing only the delusion of duality.
The reality is all that truly existed before this temporary universe came into being, was the singularity of consciousness the divine Absolute.
All that truly exists now is the singularity of consciousness the divine Absolute. The various forms we see around us, including this material universe, are merely the projections in Divine Consciousness to enable our original desire for a material experience.
After the dissolution of this universe all that will truly exist is the divine singularity of Absolute Consciousness.
Therefore, what Jesus is demonstrating is that to love others is to love ourselves. In the nonduality of existence we all emanate from the one Absolute Consciousness. This life experience is the desire of us all. There will be no rest in the bliss of the Absolute, God, until We ‘all’ find our way back home. To care for others as if they were your own brother has real significance in nonduality. This is the meaning of "guard him like the pupil of your eye." The seeing of material difference is a delusion. Others are as much one with you as your own eye is one with you. If you understand your soul as being eternal then all souls are one.
