The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 051 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 51 - Arrival of repose and a new world.
His disciples said to him, "When will the repose of the dead come about, and when will the new world come?"
He said to them, "What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it."
In truth, we all reside as the singularity of knowledge and consciousness absolute or God, in the bliss of timeless conscious repose. That is our true being in reality.
Our experience of a life and death was enabled through God, the all knowing Absolute, to grant our original desire to experience this knowledge in practice.
But, throughout this life experience our true being remains at rest in the bliss of the Absolute. Our experience of living and dying is just an experience, it is mortal and comes to an end due to its ultimate unreality. God, the Absolute in whom we truly reside, alone exists and is timeless.
"When will the repose of the dead come about, and when will the new world come?"
Those who are waiting for something ‘other worldly’ as it were, to happen within this unreal material world “When… repose of the dead come about? and when will…new world come?" etc. haven’t yet realised their true eternal nature or the unreality of this world experience.
He said to them, "What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it."
In God, the all-knowing, all things exist timelessly. “has already come”.
The disciples true being already rests in the bliss of God. And God, the Absolute Knowledge as Consciousness, is the only true existence or “World”.
Nothing else truly exists “but you do not recognize it." The disciples will gain the conscious experience of returning to the world or realm or kingdom of god when they “recognize” or realise the truth of their divinity.
