The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 097 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 097 - Parable of a woman with a jar of meal.
Jesus said, "The kingdom of the father is like a certain woman who was carrying a jar full of meal. While she was walking on the road, still some distance from home, the handle of the jar broke and the meal emptied out behind her on the road. She did not realize it; she had noticed no accident. When she reached her house, she set the jar down and found it empty."
Jesus said, "The kingdom of the father is like a certain woman who was carrying a jar full of meal.”
Jesus is using this parable of a woman and a leaking jar of meal to describe the kingdom of the father.
“While she was walking on the road, still some distance from home, the handle of the jar broke and the meal emptied out behind her on the road.”
Just as every day in her life the woman worked carrying her material possessions with her.
On this day, due to age and entropy what she used to carry her food broke and her possessions fell behind her, onto her homeward path.
“She did not realise it; she had noticed no accident. When she reached her house, she set the jar down and found it empty."
The woman, like many before her, did not realise that the material resources of her life were draining away as she travelled.
When she reached her home, she found that all her possessions had fallen behind her.
The kingdom of the father is just like this. The kingdom of the father is our true home. When we arrive there, we will have left all our worldly possessions and concerns behind us.
