The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 078 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas saying 78 - The motive for coming out to the countryside.
Jesus said, "Why have you come out into the desert? To see a reed shaken by the wind? And to see a man clothed in fine garments like your kings and your great men? Upon them are the fine garments, and they are unable to discern the truth."
“Jesus said, "Why have you come out into the desert“?
It seems Jesus has an audience. Jesus the teacher wants to bring each person in his audience to the same state of awareness and readiness so they can properly hear what he has to say.
First, they need to contemplate their individual reasons for coming into the dessert.
“To see a reed shaken by the wind“?
The answer is no. This is to encourage them to think. The point is, they do all have a reason for being there, and Jesus knows that they expect something. That the reason isn’t trivial.
“And to see a man clothed in fine garments like your kings and your great men”?
Jesus knows that they all came to witness something.
But, how will they judge what they witness?
Will their judgement be based on what they see or what they hear?
The people need to be prepared to think for themselves, to trust their ears, hearts and intuition.
“Upon them are the fine garments, and they are unable to discern the truth.“
Jesus, through understanding his audience and the use of logic is giving the people permission to question what they have been told by their officials.
All people eventually see through the masks of finery and false superiority. Then they will need a source of the truth to turn to.
If they have ears to hear they will hear the truth in Jesus’ words.
