The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 040 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 40 - A parable of a grapevine.
Jesus said, "A grapevine has been planted outside of the father, but being unsound, it will be pulled up by its roots and destroyed."
“the father” is of course the Absolute, or God.
There is nothing “outside” of the father, Absolute or God. God or the Father or the Absolute alone is the immortal reality.
The divine is immortal because the divine is the truth that eternally supports existence itself. Anything that depends on or has its roots outside of the only truth will wither.
This grapevine that Jesus refers to symbolises this material world. The fruits of a life spent working in this world appear many and desirable. The power of fame and money can be had from dedicated work. There are also the fruits of love, family, happiness and so forth.
But, Jesus is telling us that a life spent feeding on these fruits, and all else that comes from the material world, which is not the father or the Absolute, which is the highest truth of existence, will amount to nothing, however desirable such material may seem to the worldly.
A life spent tending the means of material achievement or production is a wasted life because there is nothing in this material realm that has its roots in eternal or immortal truth. There is nothing here that can guide us to that that is immortal. Everything here is decaying and dying. Jesus said this over 2000 years ago and today modern science agrees.
"but being unsound, it will be pulled up by its roots and destroyed."
Nothing in the univers has a basis in truth. The universe is mortal. therefore the universe is suffering entropy and decay.
Unless or until, during our conscious life experience we surrender desire to seek conscious realisation of the Absolute or God, that alone which has true existence, we will continue to seek worldly desires. Therefore we will once again plant our hopes outside of the reality of the Absolute and find no rest.
