The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 093 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 93 - Do not give the holy to dogs.
Jesus said, "Do not give what is holy to dogs, lest they throw them on the dungheap. Do not throw the pearls to swine, lest they [...] it [...]."
"Do not give what is holy to dogs, lest they throw them on the dungheap”.
The previous verse dealt with higher knowledge of the divine, and how much time is needed to gain proper understanding of such knowledge. We are to understand that this knowledge is rare and only ever hard earned. It cannot even be plainly written.
“Do not throw the pearls to swine, lest they [...] it [...]."
The meaning is this knowledge is like a pearl. These pearls of knowledge are precious but not because of their rarity or beauty. Jesus would cast them to all if they could be of benefit.
The point is, this particular truth can only be appreciated by those who have, through their devotion and dedication become worthy.
Not just that. Those who are unworthy, meaning unable to appreciate rare truth and beauty, such as dogs and pigs, can only damage pearls of wisdom through their mishandling. This tarnishes the reputation of such knowledge which will spread before it making it harder to find and discern by the genuine seeker.
