The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 062 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 62 - Jesus tells his secrets to the worthy.
Jesus said, "It is to those who are worthy of my mysteries that I tell my mysteries. Do not let your left (hand) know what your right (hand) is doing."
“Jesus said, "It is to those who are worthy of my mysteries that I tell my mysteries ”
The full meaning of of Jesus’ sayings are not always plain or obvious. The fact that higher truths cannot be passed on in words alone is well known and mostly understood. In fact we are told by the sages that we already know these truths but we are not conscious enough yet to see them. To fully understand higher truths one has to step back from the world with its delusions and contemplate what the wise reveal to us. This process takes time and devotion.
Those worthy of the truth are those who have undergone the discipline and devotion needed to uncover such truth. Those worthy of the truth understand its importance and the need to protect its value and integrity.
“Do not let your left (hand) know what your right (hand) is doing.”
We all are seekers in this life.
On the one hand, there are those seekers who become worthy. They come to realise the limitations of material pleasure and satisfaction. The worthy ones forego transient fulfilment and seek higher eternal truth, no matter what the cost.
On the other hand, there are those seekers who have become distracted by material concerns and not yet become worthy of higher truth. They are the ones whose desires are limited to this material world and its pleasures. Their desires and ambitions are to thrive in this world.
If the enlightened worthy (the one hand) were to pass on higher knowledge to the unworthy, (the other hand) they would hear the words only. The words of higher truth sound good and right so the unworthy may seize them believing such truth could be so easily come by. But, they will not have the knowledge to put the words into practice. But, they will grandly preach them to others and due to lacking the proper understanding to support them, they will only devalue them.
