The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.
Our Commentary on Verse 109 of Thomas Gospel.
These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
Gospel of Thomas Saying 109 - A parable of a hidden treasure.
Jesus said, "The kingdom is like a man who had a hidden treasure in his field without knowing it. And after he died, he left it to his son. The son did not know (about the treasure). He inherited the field and sold it. And the one who bought it went ploughing and found the treasure. He began to lend money at interest to whomever he wished."
Jesus said, "The kingdom is like a man who had a hidden treasure in his field without knowing it.”
His birthright was waiting to be discoverd. The man did not discover the wealth he could have had because he did nothing to improve
his field.
“And after he died, he left it to his son. The son did not know (about the treasure).
“He inherited the field and sold it.”
The son saw no value in the field other than its immediate material satisfaction. His father before him hadn’t thought to look deeper.
“And the one who bought it went ploughing and found the treasure. “He began to lend money at interest to whomever he wished."
The one who bought the field was willing to do the necessary work to explore it to see what he had obtained.
The meaning is, we find ourselves born into this field or realm of having a life. Those who take this life for granted will live have children, and then die, leaving descendants in the world to do the same.
But, this life is not our true purpose. This Parable means it would be a mistake to accept all this without investigating ("go plowing") what it is about, what is its purpose? For those willing to ask questions, Our true inheritance ("treasure"), can be uncovered.
Within this field of life, the knowledge of our eternal being can be known. There could be no greater riches than that.
