The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Our Commentary on Verse 087 of Thomas Gospel.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

Gospel of Thomas saying 87 - Soul is independent of body.
Jesus said, "Wretched is the body that is dependent upon a body, and wretched is the soul that is dependent on these two."

Jesus said, "Wretched is the body that is dependent upon a body”,
To get this body we had to be produced or born from another body “the body that is dependent upon a body”

“and wretched is the soul that is dependent on these two."
We are not our bodies. This has been stated many times and is being said again here.
Our true being is at one with the non-dual Absolute, God.
We manifest as a material form, or body. Our true being is maintained in consciousness and knowledge as the witness of our bodily experience. We see our true being as our soul inhabiting a physical form. So, our true being or soul experiences the consciousness of a wretched body being born of another wretched body “wretched is the soul that is dependent on these two."

Our material bodies are wretched because all material relies on other material for its support or origination. Just like the clay pot relies on the earth it is made from and will one day return to.
Jesus teaches us to remain aware that ultimately all things in this universe will come to an end. Only the Absolute or God is unchanging, therefore immortal.
