The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is extra to the canonical gospels in the New Testament of the bible. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried and hidden after the declaration of a strict canon of Christian scripture, where any works that were not selected for inclusion in the new testament were ordered to be destroyed. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and as late as 250 AD as a collection of sayings of Jesus.

Our Commentary on Verse 055 of Thomas Gospel.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

Gospel of Thomas Saying 55 - We should hate our family.
Jesus said, "Whoever does not hate his father and his mother cannot become a disciple to me. And whoever does not hate his brothers and sisters and take up his cross in my way will not be worthy of me."

“Jesus said, "Whoever does not hate his father and his mother cannot become a disciple to me.
Jesus himself left his family to travel and preach the divine truth for the greater good.
The truth of our existence is non-dual. ‘All’ are in fact ‘One’.
Our illusion of duality has led to labels such as, Me, Them, Mine, Theirs, Mother, Father etc. All such labels describe our sensory world of this life experience.
To awaken to the truth of non-duality we have to see ourselves in all others, and see all others as ourselves.
We exist as Consciousness only. Consciousness, which is Absolute Knowledge, is all that can truly exist.
Our experience as Daughter, Son, Mother, Father etc. is an experience in consciousness only. This Absolute consciousness is the singularity of existence projecting or enabling the conscious experience of many.
To be a disciple of Jesus and to go out to spread his divine understanding one has to realise this non-duality.
To realise the truth of non-duality one has to become aware of all labels as being a product of delusion. All labels are dual and false and need to be seen as such. Including Mother, Father, Me, You etc.
Only through the realisation of non-duality can a disciple teach others of the divine singularity of existence, or God.

“And whoever does not hate his brothers and sisters and take up his cross in my way will not be worthy of me."
As explained above, a true disciple of the teachings of Jesus has to realise their true unity with the Absolute, or God. Which is the singularity of existence itself.

Therefore, a true disciple has to accept the burden of renouncing all earthly ties, including family, to stand outside society in order to realise the one true existence or God.
